📢 SMS SenderID Registration Requirement for Ireland (Comreg)
🧾 Summary Due to a rise in SMS-based fraud in Ireland, ComReg (the Commission for Communications Regulation) has introduced a national SMS Sender ID Registry. This new system is designed to protect consumers from spoofed messages and restore trust in legitimate SMS communications. If your organisation uses branded SMS sender names (like 234BANK or MyBusiness), you must register your Sender IDs with ComReg as soon as possible to avoid service disruption.
⚠️ Key Dates
Date | Change |
---|---|
3 July 2025 | Unregistered Sender IDs will be displayed as ‘Likely Scam’ to recipients. |
3 October 2025 | SMS from unregistered Sender IDs will be blocked entirely and not delivered. |
❓ What Is a Sender ID?
A Sender ID is the name shown on a text message instead of a phone number. It’s typically used by businesses for appointment reminders, verification codes, delivery updates, etc.
Examples include: PHONO
, AIBBank
, MyClinic
, etc.
🏛️ What Is the ComReg SMS Sender ID Registry?
The SMS Sender ID Registry is an initiative by ComReg to prevent spoofing and fraud in SMS. It ensures only verified, legitimate Sender IDs are used to contact consumers.
Key points:
-
Only alphanumeric Sender IDs (not shortcodes or phone numbers) must be registered.

The registry is used by all Irish mobile operators and SMS aggregators.
